5 Photographers Who Inspire Me // Adventure Seeking Photographers To Follow
Adventure Elopement Photographer // Pensacola Wedding Photographer
I'm really stoked about this blog post because it's all about the people who inspire me to venture to new places while pushing the limits of my comfort zone. It was really hard to narrow it down to only 5 people but these 5 people are at the top of my list when it comes to some seriously breathtaking photos. I was so thrilled when I reached out to each photographer and they all responded with an enthusiastic yes! Also, plot twist they aren't all adventure wedding photographers! While I do love to follow the work of some amazing intimate wedding and elopement photographers I also love to step outside of the little bubble and draw inspiration from photographers who are adventure seekers in their own way. So without further ado here are my top 5 all time favorite photographers.
1| Freya Dowson
I started following Freya on Instagram when I saw her work with DSWT show up on my feed and I instantly was hooked. Freya is an editorial documentary photographer who travels all over the world. She is based out of London but has traveled to many off the grid places such as Kenya, Sierra Leone, and Nepal to name a few. However, her work isn't for the faint of heart. I saw in an interview she did that most of the photos she captures for clients are heart wrenching, raw, and truthful photos of what's actually going on in this world, photos that social media may not handle well.
Freya's work is down to earth and honest and it fully shows when she captures her subjects. Her work really draws me in because I can feel the emotions when viewing it and I think that is the biggest reason why she inspires me. She shows stories of wildlife, international issues, and environmental problems this world faces. If you want to see more of her work click on the images above and below or here! 2| Maddie Mae
I had the pleasure to meet this Colorado native in person as well as learn from her! Not only is she amazing at capturing adventurous couples in beautiful landscapes but she is an incredible business woman! Hearing her speak about the passion she has for elopements and intimate weddings really gets me motivated, her Instagram captions alone are just so inspiring. She believes that eloping is the best way to get married and I totally agree! I think when you believe in something as strongly as Maddie believes in what she does it truly shows through in her work. This photo below is my all time favorite photo of hers it perfectly depicts everything she is about and I LOVE that.
Maddie really is growing an empire and wants to make eloping a more common way of getting married. She kicks ass at what she does and even if you are not in the adventure wedding industry her business skills alone should be enough to follow her and watch her grow this industry. Also another one of my favorite things about Maddie is her love for the outdoors. I believe that the word adventurous gets tossed around more than it should but to her it truly means going outside and seeking something more than just average. Douglas' photos scream adventure. Not only has he thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail (something I would love to do with my pup one day) he's also hiked the Pacific Crest Trail AND the Continental Divide Trail. That's 3 cross country thru-hikes and a lot of steps! While some may think he is insane I think that is pretty rad, backpackers have a sort of unique perseverance to put themselves through suffering yet push through that everyday until they finish what they started. Doing that not once but atleast three different times is all kinds of amazing.
His photos show the true life of a thru-hiker from hitch hiking, trekking along mountain ridge lines, and preparing back country meals. Not just ALL the incredible views that come with a thru-hike. His photos are beautiful and really make me want to drop everything and spend months in the woods, every time I see one I get a little bit closer to taking the leap and starting a thru-hike myself. I have been following his journey of accomplishing the triple crown of thru-hiking for awhile now and it really is the coolest thing to watch how a photographer grows and finds their style over time. Keep killin' it Douglas! Maybe I'll see you out on the trail one day. To see more of his work you can click the photos above and below or here! You can follow him on Instagram @douglashurdle
4| Jacob Moon
Watching Jake do what he truly loves as a job is such an inspiring thing. He just journeyed from his home in Washington state all the way down to Antarctica and is currently exploring in Patagonia. He has a wife and young daughter (her name is Zoey which is kinda cool too) but he doesn't let that stop him from getting outside and doing what he loves. From viewing his photos and watching what he posts on social media its clear he is truly a "mountain man". I don't think anyone else has so much passion, enthusiasm, and drive to trek up some incredibly large peaks in less than ideal contditions.
His photos are very humbling as they remind me of how small we actually are compared to this beautiful planet. Jake also braves the cold like no other person I have seen! He truly is a jack of all trades from ice climbing to back country skiing and everything in between. Not only does he take photos of his adventures but he also takes videos which is also neat because if gives a different perspective of what us going on during his travels rather than just still shots. His guides on his blog are also super helpful if your down for a big adventure! If you want to see more of Jake's work click on the images above and below or here! If you keep up with Nat Geo the chances are you have probably seen the work of the very talented Cristina Mittermeier. Not only is she an incredible photographer herself but her partner, Paul Nicklen is also equally as amazing! Cristina's work as a photojournalist is SO inspiration because a majority of it has to do with our ever changing environment which is something I am deeply interested in. Her work again, like Freya's is raw and FULL of emotion showcasing real world issues and bringing them to the public's attention. With that being said she is so much more than a photographer, she is a marine biologist and conservationist as well.
Cristina's passion for the environment and preserving it is what I love about her. Her photos do an amazing job at portraying the issues the environment is facing. She is an intelligent women who isn't afraid of putting her self out there for adventure (like swimming just a few feet away from crocodiles). She also co-founded SeaLegacy which is an amazing organization working to protect our oceans. I could go on about Cristina for awhile but I will let her photos do the talking. If you want to check out more of her work click the images above or below or click here! You can find her on Instagram @cristinamittermeier
